Computer professional bodies in Nigeria are groups or societies  for computer professionals that set professional standards, rules and acts as the authoritative independent voice of the profession to government, industry, other professions and the general public.

According to wikipedia, “A professional association (body) is usually a nonprofit organization seeking to further a particular profession, the interests of individuals engaged in that profession and the public interest”.

Computer professional bodies in Nigeria:

However, this body speaks with one voice, and defends the interest of its members. However, there are several computer professional bodies exist in Nigeria, some of them are:

  1. Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria;
  2. Nigeria Computer Society;
  3. Information Technology Association of Nigeria;
  4. The Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria;
  5. The Nigerian Association of Computer Science Students.

We will now look briefly at these professional bodies.

Computer Professionals [Registration Council] of Nigeria (CPN):

The Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria (CPN) is charged with the responsibility of controlling and supervising of the Computing Profession in Nigeria. However, the main duties of CPN include:

  1. It determines what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the computing profession and improves those standards from time to time as circumstances may permit,
  2. It establishes and maintains a register of persons seeking to be registered to practice the computing profession in Nigeria, and it publishes from time to time, of the list of these persons; and
  3. besides that, it establishes and implements a program of accreditation of computer training institutions in Nigeria. For more detail click here.

Nigeria Computer Society (NCS)

Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) is one of the Computer professional bodies in Nigeria. It is the umbrella for all computer professionals in Nigeria, it was however, founded in 1978 as Computer Association of Nigeria (COAN). In 2002, it becomes Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) as a result of harmonization with various stakeholders and interested groups.

The Nigerian Association of Computer Science Students (NACOSS)

The Nigerian Association of Computer Science Students [NACOSS] is the umbrella body, which covers all students studying computer science and other computer-related courses in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education nationwide. Moreover, NACOSS is the student body of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), and it has several registered local chapters operational in institutions located in all the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN)

First, this is an association of Information Technology (IT) companies and institutions engaged in the practice, application and teaching of Information Technology in Nigeria. By 2009, ITAN had over 350 Information Technology driven companies in its membership.

ITAN came into existence in 1991 to promote lT literacy and penetration in Nigeria, and to promote members’ interest in the area of trade formulation of public policy, and it also promotes negotiations with government on-lT policy matters. At least, two of the personnel of the company or institution wishing to join lTAN must be members of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS). Visit ITAN to learn more.

The Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria

Additionally, The Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON) is the body of computer software and related services industry in Nigeria. However, ISPON is concerned with the growth of a software-driven Information Technology industry in Nigeria.

ISPON starts to exist in 1999 with the primary objective of being a catalyst for the growth of the Information Technology industry, driven by developments in the software sector in Nigeria. It was therefore, set up to facilitate business and trade in software and related services, hence, promote research in software technology. One of its aims is to serve as a sole source for any information on software industry in Nigeria.
